Explain why blood pressure and heart rate differ when measured in a reclining position and in a standing position.
A: Your heart beat increases when you stand up because it takes more energy to pump your blood upwards against gravity. That is why your heart needs to pump more to pump the blood up. That is why your heart rate increases. Also when your body suddenly stands up, your blood suddenly rushes. Which increases blood pressure.
Explain why high blood pressure is a health concern.
A: High blood pressure is a health concern because if your blood rushes quickly through your vessels, it can give stress to it and cause it expand. Which in the end, you have to work harder in order to keep blood pumping. If your vessels near your heart swell, then it can lead to cardiac problems.
High blood pressure can cause weak blood vessels in the brain to burst, and cause a stroke. It can cause increased pressure on the vessels in your eyes, causing blindness. It causes narrowing and thickening of the blood vessels in the kidneys, causing them to filter less waste, and can lead to the need for dialysis, or kidney failure. Also high blood pressure is associated with hardening of the arteries of the heart, which can lead to heart attacks.
Explain why an athlete must exercise harder or longer to achieve a maximum heart rate than a person who is not as physically fit.
A: Athletes' bodies become conditioned to training and have to work harder and longer in order to reach their max heart rate. Athletes spend years training for their given sport and are in top shape or
condition. On the other hand, unfit individuals are less conditioned and can easily reach their maximum heart rate.
Research and explain why smoking causes a rise in blood pressure.
A: Smoking causes a rise in blood pressure because the nicotine tightens the vessels. This increases the blood pressure in humans. This can then lead to clotting or this can lead to heart attacks.
